About Pluvicast

Pluvicast puts live weather on an interactive 3D globe. Satellite cloud cover, lightning, radar precipitation, temperature fields and local forecasts are drawn as layers on a terrain model of the Earth, all pinned to a single shared timeline. Drag the timeline and every layer moves to the same moment, so you can see how observations and forecasts line up - and where each dataset ends.
The name comes from Latin pluvia (rain) and cast as in forecast.
What you can do on the globe
Spin the globe by grabbing its surface, zoom in to a region, or switch to the surface view and look towards the horizon from beneath the cloud layer. Each layer can be toggled, faded and contrast-boosted separately. The timeline reaches one day back and two days ahead; layers that have no data for the chosen moment fade out instead of pretending.
Data
Everything you see comes from public meteorological sources: EUMETSAT satellites, the European OPERA radar composite, numerical forecast models such as ICON-EU, and the ETOPO 2022 terrain model. The full list with licences is on the data sources page, and the models page explains where the forecasts come from.
Coverage currently focuses on Europe, where the highest-resolution open data is available. Global layers are planned.
Accuracy
Pluvicast is a visualisation tool, not an official warning service. Data arrives with the delays and quirks of its upstream sources, and forecasts are model output, not promises. For severe weather decisions, always consult the meteorological service of your country.
